Bitten by a shark and struck by lightning in the same day, surviving multiple cancers, a life in the surf industry. Teenage wild life in New York, Los Angeles and Hawaii.

I was a surf kid from New York who grew up chasing waves and somehow finding myself in a series of unlikely—and occasionally life-threatening—adventures.

Surfing led me to competition and eventually into the surf industry, where I helped shape some of its most influential brands, including Rusty, Reef, and FCS. Along the way, I traveled the world and had a front-row seat as surfing—and the culture around it—changed.

Then came multiple battles with cancer, followed by another unexpected chapter: becoming a stepfather in my late 50s. Both changed the way I looked at the life I’d already lived.

This is the story of that journey—and what it taught me about taking chances, appreciating what you have, and making the most of the life you get.
